Meaty stew with mashed potatoes is one of the most comfortable combinations imaginable. Traditional shepherd's pie, sometimes known as cottage pie, has been around for three centuries and is a staple of British cuisine. This recipe takes a long time to make from scratch, but it was originally made to use up leftovers. The slow cooker makes short work of what would otherwise be a laborious preparation, turning this dish into a midweek miracle.
Numerous variants of shepherd's pie exist, as is typical with most traditional recipes. Lamb and beef are also used in different forms. Vegetables may range from a plain old mix of carrots and peas to a wild and wonderful assortment of maize, mushrooms, and turnips. I like my sauces plain and savory, like gravy, even if they might be tomato-based on occasion. Using ground beef keeps the cost down, and the addition of fresh herbs gives it a luxurious taste, in my version.
