Spread the potatoes out evenly in a pan that has been oiled. Before topping the potatoes with butter, sprinkle them with onion and bacon. Use foil to cover the dish.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and bake for 45 minutes. Take off the foil and mix the potatoes. In a preheated broiler, brown the potatoes for about 5 minutes, or until they are crispy. For uniform browning, stir occasionally, maybe every minute or two. Instantaneous service is required.
